Dress Shopping Tips & Tricks

Everyone knows the struggle of trying to find the perfect dress. Whether it be for a party, formal, wedding – no matter what the occasion is, it’s always turns into a huge process. It usually starts by scrolling through page after page of dresses online, then making your way to the mall to roam aimlessly around the dress section, then try on a few, just to leave empty handed. Let’s just admit it, dress shopping is far from fun. But, it doesn’t have to be that way every single time. I’m here to share some of my favorite tips and tricks for dress shopping, to help make the process a little bit easier.

  1. First and probably most important, don’t go alone. Bring a friend! It really helps to have the opinion of others. Bringing a friend along takes the stress away and makes it a lot more fun. If no one’s available to tag along, take lots of pictures and send them out to friends! I can admit it, I’m guilty for having tons of dressing room mirror selfies on my camera roll!
  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for opinions! I always, always find myself asking sale associates or other customers for their opinions. It always helps to see what an outsider is thinking, and more often then not they are going to be truly honest with you.
  3. Try on dresses that are outside of your comfort zone! Whenever I’m dress shopping I always try to pick up a dress or two that a little different then my normal style. My mom is famous for handing me dresses that I would never in a million years try on. A lot of times, I end up actually liking these out of the ordinary dresses.
  4. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t find something the first time. It’s important to give yourself plenty of time to find the perfect dress – and definitely try out multiple stores. Don’t limit your options.
  5. Try to go to stores like Marshalls or T.J.-Maxx. They have an amazing dress section. What I personally like about these stores is that the dresses here are different from all the ones you see in the other stores. It’s a nice difference from the typical dresses you find. Sure, they might not have every single size or color – but you never know what you’re going to find.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask when new shipments of dresses come in! I’ve asked several different stores when they get new shipments in! This way, I know that there will be some new options. This is especially helpful with stores like Marshalls and T.J.-Maxx! They’re constantly getting new shipments of fabulous (and affordable) dresses!

No matter how long it takes you to find the perfect dress, it’s always worth it. Just make sure that no matter what dress, romper, jumpsuit, or whatever you end up with – you feel comfortable in! My most important tip is to make sure that you feel comfortable and confident. So now, it’s time to get out there and find your perfect dress! Good luck and don’t stress!

Coconut Oil

If you’ve been anywhere on the Internet lately, you’re no stranger to the words coconut oil. This product seems to be the answer to every single beauty issue out there. Bad hair day? Coconut oil. Natural toothpaste? Coconut oil. Ran out of shaving cream? Coconut oil. So a couple of weeks ago, I caved and purchased a tub for myself.

Over the past few weeks I’ve experimented with this product several different ways and I’ve got to say I have not been disappointed. So far, I’ve used it as a makeup remover, moisturizer, and for hair care. This literally just brushes the surface on all the amazing things this product can do.

As a makeup remover, it was pretty good at getting all the products off, without leaving me feeling dry or too oily. The best part is, that my skin felt super moisturized after! The one downfall would have to be taking off any eye makeup with the oil. It’s kind of hard to rub such a oily and thick product all over your eyes, without feeling like they are glued shut. I suggest having a warm, wet face cloth right next to you, so you can easily get wipe your face. Overall, I think that it worked just as well as any other cream makeup remover, like Ponds.

One of the biggest claims of coconut oil is that it’s a great moisturizer, so of course I had to try it out for myself! As a person with sensitive skin, I’m always on the hunt for a natural moisturizer that won’t irritate my skin – and coconut oil got the job done. It’s great at locking in moisture for the entire day. My only suggestion is to use it at nighttime simply because you’re going to feel oily after using it. There’s usually a thin layer of oil resting on top of the skin, due to the nature of the product. It takes a while for it really to seep it, but the results are fabulous!

Lastly, I used this product for some simple hair care. First, I used it to smooth down some flyaways – BUT be careful, if you use too much you are going to look like you haven’t showered in days! It’s all about moderation! Second, I used it to treat the bottom of my hair, where there’s a ton of dead, damaged ends. Simply, take a little scoop of product and massage it in the ends of the hair. Tie it up and wait about thirty minutes before washing your hair normally. So far, I’ve done this a few times and my hair actually feels much smoother and silkier – especially at the bottoms.

Overall, coconut oil is becoming a staple in my beauty routine. I’m constantly finding new ways to use it and highly suggest it!

Sensitive Skin Must Haves

As a person who has suffered from eczema for my entire life, I know the struggle of finding beauty products that don’t irritate your skin. For all of you that don’t know what it’s like, consider yourself lucky. It’s beyond annoying when you can’t just go to the store and pick up any old lotion because it smells nice, or you just want to try it. Personally, I have to look for brands that are natural, organic, or baby specific. Over the years, with many trials of lotions and body washes, I have found my sensitive skin must haves.

Dr. Teal’s

Dr. Teal’s products are all epsom salt based – which works wonders for eczema! Epsom salts are perfect for relaxing skin, especially when irritated. Even better, for those days and nights where the itching seems like it won’t stop – a quick soak in an epsom salt bath will reduce the itch. What’s nice about Dr. Teal’s products is that they are scented – ranging from lavender to chamomile. As a person with sensitive skin, I often find it hard to find a scented lotion or body wash that doesn’t irritate my skin. My favorites from Dr. Teal’s have to be the Pure Epsom Salt Pure Soaking Solution, Pure Epsom Salt Body Wash, and Pure Epsom Salt Body Lotion. In addition to all these great benefits, each product, depending on their scent, helps relax the body in a different way. For example, all the lavender products help “Soothe & Sleep.” So, while helping to soothe dry, irritated skin it delivers a little extra something.

Okay, like I said before, sometimes you have to turn to baby specific products, and that’s exactly what BabyGanics is. These products are non-toxic and the company puts all of their products through strict testing to make sure that exceed their strict standards. In addition, all products are non-allergenic and non-irritating Babyganics happens to have all sorts of products – from baby wipes to laundry detergent. Although, I haven’t tried any of their home products, I’ve heard great reviews and that they are sensitive skin friendly!

I happened to stumble upon these products when researching lotions for sensitive skin. Since then, I’ve become an avid user of their Eczema Care Skin Protectant Cream and Moisturizing Therapy Cream Wash. Both are made with colloidal oatmeal, which is soothing on dry, irrupted skin.

Neutrogena Naturals

Through many experiments, I found it very hard to find a good face wash. I didn’t want to use my body wash on my face due to research saying that body washes are sometimes too rough on the sensitive skin of the face – and for starters my skin is already super sensitive. So, I had to do a couple of trials with face washes, and eventually found Neutrogena Naturals. I’m a fan of Neutrogena to begin with, so I wasn’t too shocked when their product turned out to be the best. This line of Neutrogena products is designed without harsh chemicals that are irritating to sensitive skin. I fell in love with the Purifying Facial Cleanser and highly suggest it to anyone that’s in the market for a new face wash.

Let’s Talk About Leggings…

Leggings are hands down one of my favorite items in my closet – ever. They are so easy to dress up or down; it’s basically all about what you choose to match it with. I can confidently say that I wear leggings about five of the seven days in a week. Now some of you are probably like, put on a pair of jeans, but let’s be real, no one likes jeans. They are uncomfortable especially if you’re sitting in class all day long. And please don’t even get me started on when they start to do that weird stretching thing. The most annoying thing in the world, is when I put my jeans on in the morning and they fit just right – hugging every curve and just looking fine, and then boom three p.m. hits and they’re baggy around the knees and being needed to be picked up every five minutes? Like why? With leggings you don’t have this problem.

I’m about to answer the age old mystery – girls don’t just own like two pairs of black leggings – there about a entire draw full of them, and three more pairs in the laundry. They are just such a go to piece of clothing, that it’s essential to have so many pairs. I would say I own about ten pair of leggings, and around three of them still have the tags on.

In today’s world it is more and more common to wear leggings as pants. Don’t listen to those silly fashion magazines where they tell you leggings aren’t pants – because they are. It honestly just depends on which one’s you’re wearing and how you style them! (A word of advice, make sure that they aren’t too thin, because no one wants to see your underwear when you bend over) Here are some cute outfit ideas to incorporate leggings into your everyday wardrobe:

  1. Long Loose Tops – pair your leggings with a top that comes to a length, where your bottom will be covered.
  2. A cute sweater – sweaters are just as comfortable as leggings, so why not put them together? Wear a pair of boots, necklace, and maybe even a scarf. This combination gives leggings, a little more of pants feel.
  3. T-shirt or Hoodie – who says that leggings always have to be dressy? Dress comfortable one day!

Leggings are a great essential to have in your wardrobe. No matter how you style your leggings, make sure you stay true to you – incorporate and wear what makes you comfortable!

NYX Liquid Lingerie

If you’re into makeup at all, or if you’ve just been on the Internet, you’ve seen the hype about Kylie Jenner’s Lip Kits. I cannot tell you the amount of times that I’ve seen reviews, swatches, dupes, rants, etc. about these products. I know several people that do and they rave about them. Everyone always tells me that they are long lasting, the color is amazing, and it’s truly worth the money. After hearing such great reviews and watching endless amounts of beauty bloggers rave about these kits, I decided to maybe purchase one. Then, I saw they were $17, plus shipping and handling – while my heart told me yes, my bank account screamed no. I ended up going to my local Ulta and purchasing a few of the dupes that were in my budget – some sucked, others were amazing. Point of the story here though, is that little did I know I ended up finding my favorite lip product of all time – NYX Liquid Lingerie.

Liquid Lingerie is an entire line of liquid lipstick, with a matte finish. The entire line is more natural/nude colors with hues of browns, pinks, and reds. Each tube is $7 and can be found literally everywhere. I first purchased the shade, “Bedtime Flirt” which is a reddish toned pink. I went home and immediately tested it out. After going about my day, the color stayed in place, there was no bleeding, and best of all I didn’t really have to reapply. I was sold and ready to purchase more. After falling in love with the line, I went back and bought “Push Up” which is more light brown. I highly recommend these two colors – they’re gorgeous!

Honestly, that’s what makes brands like NYX so great; they’re affordable, easy to find, and best of all they deliver a quality product. Sure, I can drop $17 on a lip kit, but when I’m able to get the same long lasting and pigmented product for much cheaper, I’m going to opt for that way. I don’t doubt that Kylie’s Lip Kits are anything but great, but until my bank account allows me to purchase one, I’ll be stocking up on my Liquid Lingerie.

Let’s Get Back to Being Real.

Phones – we all have them, we all use them, and let’s be real…we all hide behind them. Nothing is real anymore – there’s no connections, no emotions, no reactions. That “lol” text you just sent? You weren’t laughing. See that’s the thing, phones and texting take away the most genuine part of any relationship – that connection, the moment where someone’s face lights up, the pure reaction to conversation. Those little moments aren’t there anymore all because of a stupid phone. Sure, an emoji can add a little something, but it’s not the same thing.

See with phones, we’re given the ability to stop and actually think about a response. The message that you just received might have completely pissed you off, but you can type out this happy message. Put that same situation in real life, and the person you’re talking to is going to know that you’re not happy. Maybe it’s just me as a person, I rather get the true genuine reaction. I don’t want the fake, happy response. Which leads to me to the next point…

If you have a problem with someone, don’t hide behind your phone. Don’t use it as a weapon to type out these nasty messages, full of things you wouldn’t say in person. If you have fight with someone, don’t work it out via text message. Sit down face-to-face and actually have that fight. Scream. Yell. Cry. Tell it like it is. We need that real factor, it builds relationships. It’s too easy to type out “I forgive you,” saying those words to a person’s face can be real hard. Or even worse, don’t use it as a mechanism to ignore someone. We live in a society where you’re constantly on your phone, so you get those messages, snaps, see the insta posts. Even worse, it’s the fact that you have access to these things that makes the fight, problem, whatever it is so much worse. One person can be having so much fun, and the other is sitting there wondering what the problem is. Ignoring someone isn’t a option in today’s world. It’s tough being left in the dark, because sure you might be hurt over something, but I can tell you that person that doesn’t know what’s going on is hurting ten times more then you.

Another horrible thing about phones is that they invented this “talking” phase of relationships. I can tell you, I’ve “talked” to multiple guys, but not one of them took me out on date. Not one made the effort to actually get to know me in person – always through text message. I can remember one time a guy actually called my phone, and I freaked out because it was so out of the norm. I would have never in a million years expected a phone call? It lasted about twenty minutes, but when I hung up I was on cloud nine. I had one of the best conversations in the “talking” phase that I ever had. Sure, it wasn’t face to face, but still I got to hear his voice and got that genuine emotion and reaction that texting doesn’t give you.

I’m not here to complain about phones, they’re great but they just take away so much. The most genuine conversations that I have are always face-to-face, where you get to learn so much about a person. There’s no greater feeling then seeing that spark in someone’s eyes when you happen to mention something that they love. You don’t get that when you’re texting. Half of the conversations on my phone right now are meaningless. There variations of “what’s up” and “what are you doing.” Honestly, there are probably about two conversations that actually have meaning. Isn’t that sad? That I text so many people, yet only two conversations mean something? The rest are 8-ball games (which I always lose) or a conversation sending emojis back and forth? What substance and meaning does that actually bring to my life?

Maybe I’m old fashioned, who knows. I prefer sitting with someone face to face and actually have a conversation. There have been times where I’ve lost track of time talking to someone and it’s 3am, but if it were texting I would have fell asleep already. All I’m trying to say is put down the text messages for once. Make a phone call, have a face-to-face conversation. Have one of those conversations where you get lost, you’re struggling to keep your eyes open, but you don’t want it to end. Get to see that spark in someone’s eyes and really notice their genuine reaction -it’s worth it and you get to learn and see an entire different side of someone. Let’s get back to being real.

What’s in my Makeup Bag?

I’m going to start off by being real honest here- this is truly me showcasing what products I have in my makeup bag, but also I’m using this as an excuse to finally sort through this bag. There’s more things shoved in this little Vera Bradley pouch then there should be. So without further ado, let’s see what’s in my makeup bag…

The Tartiest Paint Palette’s Contour & Highlight Set –

Let’s me tell you, this highlighter is absolutely amazing. Hands down, my favorite. It gives me that perfect amount of glow, without going over the top. For the contour and lighter pink shade, they’re decent, but there’s really no WOW factor.

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation –

A friend recommended this to me and I instantly fell in love. The coverage is amazing and lasts all day long. If you tend to have a heavy hand, be careful, it might cake up slightly.

Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer –

Now this is an amazing bronzer, and fun story: it hasn’t always been my go to bronzer. Too Faced did not disappoint, I would say it’s an even better bronzer, plus it smells like chocolate.

Katy Kat Eye Mascara by Covergirl (Waterproof & Regular) –

This is hands down the best mascara I’ve ever used, my lashes have never looked so full and long. It stays on all day and doesn’t flake, which is amazing. I hate when you glance in a mirror in the middle of the day and you have mascara flakes all over your face – just ugh. The waterproof formula of this mascara does not budge at all. I’ve worn it in pools, waterparks, rainstorms, and of course some tears. I’ve come home from these events with my lashes looking perfect still.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara-

I love mascara, okay? I got this free little sample on one of my makeup journeys, and it’s been pretty good. I’m not overly in love with it, but it gets the job done. I know this is one of the most hyped products in the makeup world, but I don’t get it. It’s good, but not great.

L’Oreal Lineur Intense Eyeliner-

I stole this from my mom and it’s actually pretty nice. It’s a liquid liner, which has a brush tip, which is great for lining eyes. I use it for my every day eyeliner, and the formula is easy to manipulate into the perfect wing, and easy to get off. But get this, I’ve had this tube for a solid two months, and it’s still going. I feel like it’s never ending (I’m definitely not complaining).

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Cherry Skies-

If you’re in the market for a new red lipstick, please buy this. It’s amazing. The color lasts all night, and maybe, just maybe, needs to be reapplied once. I purchased this red because I was in desperate need of a new red for a Christmas party, and I don’t regret this decision. It’s a dark red, which is just dark enough.

Okay, so this ended up being more of a products I love in my makeup bag, but hey, that’s why they’re in my bag in the first place.
